Charity Worker (Volunteer)

OneWig OneSmile is a charity established in the UK, to promote and protect the physical and mental health of people experiencing medical hair loss, in particular but not exclusively Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) group who have lost their hair through cancer treatments or other illnesses and medical conditions, by the provision of free human hair wigs and hair pieces

2025/2026 Winter Campaign – Charity Worker (Volunteer)

Campaign Period: 22 December 2025 – 20 March 2026

1. Role Title: Community Outreach Volunteer (Sunderland – 2 positions)

Role Purpose:

To support OneWig OneSmile’s charitable outreach during the 2025/2026 Winter Campaign, providing free wigs, confidence support, and emotional assistance to individuals affected by medical or trauma-related hair loss.

Location:

Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre
Sunderland Royal Hospital, Kayll Road, Sunderland, SR4 7TP

Duration:

22 December 2025 – 20 March 2026 (Fixed Term – Voluntary)

Key Responsibilities:

  

  • Support  charitable outreach activities and workshops deliveries in hospitals, hospices, and community centres.
  • Assist in distributing donated wigs and confidence resources to beneficiaries in      these settings.
  • Deliver culturally sensitive awareness and confidence sessions.
  • Share practical wig-care knowledge with families, carers, and local volunteers.

Skills and Attributes Required:

  • Empathy, patience, and a caring attitude.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supporting people in distress or health-related circumstances.
  • Awareness of cultural diversity and understanding of the needs of people of colour in hair-loss support contexts.
  • Ability to work cooperatively under supervision and follow safeguarding guidelines.

Why Overseas Recruitment Is Required:

The campaign focuses on culturally inclusive support, particularly for people of colour and other underrepresented groups in hair-loss services. Volunteers selected from abroad have the lived experience, cultural understanding, and prior community engagement necessary to ensure inclusive delivery. Local UK volunteers with this specific experience were not available within the limited timeframe of the campaign.

Hours:

25 hours per week (flexible, based on campaign events)

Remuneration:

Unpaid – reasonable subsistence and travel expenses reimbursed only.

2. Role Title: Campaign Support Volunteer (Barking – 1 position)

Role Purpose:

To support logistical and delivery of the 2025/2026 Winter Campaign, ensuring smooth coordination of outreach events, storage, and charitable material distribution.

Location:

Macmillan Cancer Information Room
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust

Duration:

22 December 2025 – 20 March 2026 (Fixed Term – Voluntary)

Key Responsibilities:

  

  • Support charitable outreach activities and workshops deliveries in hospitals, hospices, and community centres.
  • Assist in distributing donated wigs and confidence resources to beneficiaries in      these settings.
  • Deliver culturally sensitive awareness and confidence sessions.
  • Share practical wig-care knowledge with families, carers, and local volunteers.

Skills and Attributes Required:

  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Basic administrative or clerical experience (voluntary or paid).
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Understanding of charitable ethics and safeguarding.
  • Cultural awareness, particularly in supporting communities of colour with dignity and sensitivity.

Hours:

25 hours per week (flexible, depending on outreach schedule).

Remuneration:

Unpaid – only reasonable travel or meal expenses reimbursed.

3. Role Title: Community Outreach Volunteer (Cardiff – 1 position, in partnership with Ovacome Charity)

Role Purpose:

To support collaborative charitable work between OneWig OneSmile and Ovacome Charity in Cardiff, providing wig support, emotional confidence sessions, and outreach to individuals affected by hair loss.

Location:

Ovacome Charity, Cardiff

Duration:

22 December 2025 – 20 March 2026 (Fixed Term – Voluntary)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver charitable wig-care demonstrations and confidence sessions for women in recovery.
  • Provide empathy-led, non-professional emotional support to cancer survivors and hair-loss patients.
  • Engage with community groups to improve awareness and acceptance of wig use.
  • Collaborate with Ovacome team members in planning and hosting charitable events.
  • Assist with logistics of wig donation distribution.

Skills and Attributes Required:

  • Strong empathy and communication skills.
  • Sensitivity to cultural, emotional, and psychological aspects of hair loss.
  • Experience volunteering or working with health-related or community charities.
  • Understanding of hair-care diversity, especially textured and cultural wig types.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • The campaign requires four temporary Charity Worker volunteers to assist with outreach, logistics, and beneficiary support. These roles are: Community Outreach Volunteers (2) – Sunderland Campaign Support Volunteer (1) – Barking Community Outreach Volunteer (1) – Cardiff (in partnership with Ovacome Charity) All positions are voluntary, unpaid, and time-limited.

Skills acquired: Customer Service, Mental Health 

Specialist Wig Makers Urgently Needed

Introduction

This role is key to ensuring that OneWig OneSmile wig service is offered and made available to every woman diagnosed with medical hairloss throughout the UK. The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills, especially on the telephone, be able to work under pressure due to the workload.

You must be passionate about building meaningful and purposeful relationships with the team, with our charitable objectives and outstanding service delivery at the heart of what you do. As the person responsible for creating exceptional wig service, you must always be a good ambassador and representative of the charity with an eye for detail.

Requirements


  • Hand make wefts from hair raw hair
  • Create Cornroll, Single Plaits and other Afro-Caribbean hairstyles from wigs
  • Create hair bundles from wefts
  • Able to use both sewing machine and manual method to create Lace wigs
  • Customise Wigs
  • Cut and Style
  • Deep cleaning of raw hair 
  • Cornrow and other creative African and Afro Caribbean styles on human hair wigs
  • Install lace wig


Responsibilities;

  • Able to work 100% as a Volunteer
  • The nature of the work means the applicant will be working in a fast-paced environment, the applicant should work with a sense of urgency, have a can-do attitude, be able to work well alone as well as in a team, be able to take direction and be willing to prioritise their workload to keep to deadlines. 

Qualifications and Remuneration

  

Qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 2 (equivalent) or
  • Three years experience

Salary: This is a 100% Volunteer position, please only apply if you are willing to Volunteer for the Charity. There is no remuneration for this role either
